Hoka Mach 3 Vs Hoka Mach 4

The Best HOKA Running Shoes for the Marathon

While the new Mach 4 builds off the same HOKA technology featured in the older Mach 3 , the updated Mach 4 is lighter and more flexible.

Similar to the Mach 3, the Mach 4 features a ProFly dual-density midsole and rubberized EVA outsole. However, HOKA blended the midsole foams together in their newest update to create an even more lightweight feel and to slim down the shoe.

The mesh upper in both shoes remains breathable and well-ventilated, however the Mach 4 uses heat-pressed TPU yarn to create a stable feel up top and add to the overall durability of the shoe.

Though the Mach 3 also has a pull tab on the heel, the overall heel collar adheres to a more traditional shape.

HOKA sought to challenge that in the Mach 4 by implementing an anatomical heel collar that contours to the shape and movement of your heel, really driving home the bucket seat feel of the shoe.

A flared Achilles heel pull-tab serves dual purpose by creating an easy-on, easy-off experience in the Mach 4, and also prevents uncomfortable rubbing against the back of the heel that can lead to blisters.

Reviewers thought the Mach 3 felt stiff, but the Mach 4 felt more flexible and provided smoother transitions.

Overall, the Mach 4 reflects HOKA’s intent to create a cushioned, lightweight ride that gives you the responsiveness you need to pick up the pace.

A Few New Ingredients

In addition to those basic shoe design elements, Hoka has rolled out other new tech in recent years. ProFly is a dual-density cushioning system that combines soft foam in the heel with firmer foam in the forefoot, and it debuted on the Tracer and Clayton shoes in 2016. Last Fall, Hoka pushed boundaries again when it released the goofy-looking TenNine. With its massive heel, this shoe is designed specifically for sprinting down steep hillsthe extra foam soaks up shock and the broad sole provides exceptional stability.

The sole of Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit is slightly curved for smooth riding on the Pebax-based foam. The horseshoe-shaped heel holds the foots back steady on the touchdown. The Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit also has a wide forefoot and flared foam around the heel to enhance stable lands.

Hoka Reviews: What Do Customers Think

No Hoka shoes review would be complete without taking a look at what customers had to say about their experiences with the brands products. Weve looked at the tech, weve seen that theyre doctor approved, but how do they shape up in the real world?

Well take a look at the brands website first, and follow it up with some external takes from the likes of TrustPilot and SiteJabber. Lets dive right in.

To no ones surprise, individual product reviews on hoka.com are absolutely glowing. For example, the mens Hoka Clifton 8 boasts a very impressive score of 4.5/5 stars out of 332 ratings. Many of the happy comments sound a little bit like this:

The shoes themselves are great. True to size, although they do seem a tad narrow for a wide size Definitely a shoe for a neutral arch. The shoes themselves feel like good construction so far, and they do seem to have a good amount of shock absorption and rebound.. Would definitely recommend!

Our Hoka shoes review found that other products are also well-received on their website:

    • Mens Bondi 6: 4.6/5 stars out of 1,810 ratings
    • Mens Bondi 7: 4.5/5 stars out of 2,808 ratings
    • Womens Rincon: 4.4/5 stars out of 249 ratings
    • Womens Mach 4: 4.6/5 stars out of 256 ratings

Its all looking great so far. Across the board, each of the brands shoes is a hit. But how does Hoka fare on external review sites?

Moving forward, we were disappointed to see an even lower rating of 1.7/5 stars out of 39 reviews on SiteJabber.

New Upper Design Locks In Comfort

The biggest change to the HOKA Mach 4 is the refined upper shape and makeup.

In previous models, the mesh upper was intended to lock the foot into place with specialized detailing around the midfoot and added panels for breathability.

Now, the Mach 4 sports a sleek, redesigned mesh upper knit from heat-pressed TPU yarn for added durability and structure to last through everyday mileage. This new upper material helps maintain the lightweight feel of the shoe.

The updated upper also works with the reconstructed heel collar to create a super-secure feel that our reviewers loved.

My heel feels locked in place, and there’s a nice bucket-seat-like feel in the footbedI land right in the middle of the shoe every time, says one reviewer.

The pull tab on the heel flares away from the Achilles to prevent uncomfortable rubbing on the run. This construction is paralleled by the flared heel counter in the outsole to create a speedy vibe.

I love the heel counter and the collar shape. The upper is super comfortable and adjusts really easily, says one Fleet Feet reviewer.

HOKA designers zeroed in on the snug, fast fit of the Mach 4 by attaching the super-thin, padded tongue to a semi-bootie construction within the shoe, adding to the easy adjustability of the Mach 4. Plus, a removable molded EVA sockliner helps you customize the fit throughout the midfoot.

The midfoot is dialed in, and I think the tongue’s semi-bootie construction helps create that security, one reviewer says.

The Best Hoka One One Running Shoes In 2021

HOKA ONE ONE shoes are known for their maximum shock absorption, minimal weight and low heel drop. Read on for an overview of the best HOKA running shoes!

HOKA ONE ONE was founded in 2009 by two French trail runners who wanted to create the ultimate running experience. And they have been very successful. Because in record time HOKA has become a recognised running shoe brand that is known and loved all over the world.

All HOKA ONE ONE running shoes feature maximum shock absorption, minimal weight and a low heel drop of 4 or 5 mm. All shoes have a slightly curved sole construction, the Meta-Rocker design, which creates a very smooth and efficient roll from landing to toe-off to support the runner’s natural stride.

At first glance, many of the shoes appear large and clumsy. However, all HOKA running shoes are designed with an Active Foot Frame, which means that the foot is down in the midsole, instead of on top of the midsole. It means that the sole is higher up on the outside of the shoe than where the foot is inside the shoe. Which is why the sole looks particularly beefy. This Active Foot Frame design beds the heel and foot deeply into the midsole, working like a bowl that embraces and supports the foot from all sides.

Here’s a quick overview of the best HOKA ONE ONE running shoes you can buy right now.

What Makes Hoka One One The Best Running Shoes For Metatarsalgia Pain

Ill never forget the onset of my metatarsalgia. I was running on a treadmill at Orangetheory Fitness in Austin. I fought through the pain until the end of the workout. I went home and took some Advil. I iced my foot that night. But the pain remained.

I waited a few days for the pain to subside.

Then I waited a few weeks.

I then a couple of months passed.

And I started to wonder: Will I ever be able to run again? It was so bad that I couldnt even run and play with my kids on our regular family walks. I would jog a step or two and then limp to a stop. It was miserable.

I finally did what I should have done from the beginning I went to an orthopedist. She took X-rays of my injured left foot and found no structural damage. She felt positive I was dealing with metatarsalgia as well as capsulitis that had crept into my second toe.

Is there a treatment for this? I asked.

You need to get a pair of Hokas, she said.

I had been running in the same model of running shoes made by a popular, prominent brand. The orthopedist took one of my running shoes, though, and demonstrated the problem.

She held the shoe lengthwise for me to see. Then she pushed up on the toe.

This is called the metatarsal break of your shoe, she said. And it breaks too much.

As it turns out, the metatarsal break of my running shoes was allowing my toes to bend far too much. With each step, my shoes were allowing an inordinate amount of stress on the balls of my feet and the toes themselves .
