I dont like the way they feel, declares Mr. Della Valle, the chairman of Tods, stopping mid-stride to study his feet more closely. Its the part around the toes, he says. It needs to be rounder.
Mr. Della Valle does things the old-fashioned way: by instinct. To find out if a new style of shoes will work in the marketplace, he doesnt need focus groups or poll testing he wears them. After a few days, if theyre not to his liking, he renders his verdict: These wont go into production.
Despite running Tods like a traditional, Old World family business, Mr. Della Valle has turned it into a successful multinational, multibillion-dollar company, whose buttery leather moccasins adorn the feet of Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, Gwyneth Paltrow and thousands of other loyalists around the world.
Around his sweeping white office, there are no computers and no iPhones Mr. Della Valle, 56, feels more comfortable clinging to an outdated Motorola cellphone. Above him looms the painted silhouette of President John F. Kennedy, one of his idols.

The model we have here is called Laccetto Gommino and it retails for $495 in the US. It is of course made in Italy but other than the fact that it has some laces, leathers, and rubber nub sole, theres really not much more information on their website. Considering, its almost $500 expensive, I find that quite disappointing personally because they dont say anything about the construction, the leather used, whether its cowhide or calf hide, and as a consumer whos educated, I would like to know that information.

Tods Groups Hogan Made In Romania
Diego Della Valle, Tods Group owner, has been one of the biggest defendants of Made in Italy, voicing the importance of Italian brands to be produced in Italy, thus fuelling the countrys craftsmanship, which he believes is critical to the success of Italian luxury. Recently, Mr Della Valle made a commitment to contribute over 30 million euros to the restoration works of Romes iconic Colosseum.
Italian daily newspaper Il Giornale reports today it has learned some of Hogan shoes, a brand of the Tods Group, are actually made in Romania, however, the company fails to openly admit. The companys most recent financial report does not include any information about a production facility in Romania, stating The production of leatherwear goods is concentrated in the companys own facilities, with partial third party production being allocated to regions with a strong tradition in leather manufacturing.
According to Il Giornale, Tods Group recently acquired two production facilities in Romania and China. Apparently the Chinese factory is staffed with Italian workers, however the information could not be verified.
