Walking Shoes Vs Running Shoes

Walking and running shoes may look similar, but they are designed for two different purposes the key difference being in the cushioning.

When you walk, your heel contacts the ground first in the typical heel to toe motion, so the heel will absorb most of the shock. Walking shoes therefore have a thicker, often beveled heel but are more flexible towards the ball of the foot which helps the walker push off.

In contrast runners land flat footed so the cushioning is across the whole sole which are much stiffer. Running is also a much higher impact exercise than walking and the thicker soles act as shock absorbers. They will also be lighter weight and have greater arch support.

It is not advisable to wear walking shoes to run in, it is however acceptable to walk in running shoes. It is worth bearing in mind that the thicker sole on running shoes may be more of a tripping hazard when walking.

No Flared Heel Needed

What Are the Best Walking Shoes for Seniors

Flared heels provide stability, and you will see some very aggressive flared heels on trail running shoes. But walkers strike with the heel, and a chunky flared heel isn’t a good landing zone for a walking step. In fact, a shoe designed for walking would have a slightly undercut heel. These will be hard to find on a running shoe, but you may find it on some walking shoes.

Rule #3 Wear Good Shoes

If you wear cheap shoes your feet will not love you. Take Good shoes, sturdy shoes that will hold up to several miles a day for the length of your trip. Cheap shoes will fall apart and then where will you be? Buying shoes. Buying shoes on a trip isnt a bad thing, I do it all the time and Ill address that in a bit.

When deciding which shoes to take remember that your feet will likely swell a bit, especially in the heat of summer, so take shoes that will accommodate that. You need shoes with some structure but also resilience. I like leather shoes, they meet that criteria of structure and resilience so well.

I love Birkenstocks in the summer months. They have a perfect sole in my opinion, stiff with a bit of cushion and they have become more fashion forward that those Jesus shoes of years gone by.

Good shoes are well made and have excellent support. If you have these in your closet and you love them, take them.

Should You Bring Shoes To India

Theres a chance that you can get by just fine without bringing shoes to India, and instead wear sandals the whole time.

This really depends on:

  • What types of activities youre planning on doing
  • What type of activities that you may end up adding into your itinerary
  • Whether or not youll be in a cold weather destination

But no matter your plans, generally speaking, its never a bad idea to have a pair of shoes with you when you travel, just in case!

Side note!

Save Flip Flops For The Beach

Fitness & Exercise : How to Select Walking Shoes

An American friend of mine used to joke that you can always spot an American in Rome because they are the only ones who wear flip flops in the city. I am not sure this is the case but what is true is that flip flops are not usually regarded as city wear.

Italians love sandals for the summer but we usually prefer leather ones.

Unless you have good flip flops that can somewhat cushion your step, I do suggest you embrace the Italian way and leave them for the beach only: long hours walking on rubber are unlikely to do good to your joints and they are super unpleasant on cobbles!

Dont forget to pair your shoes with feet friendly accessories such as good quality walking socks and ballerina liners!

Shoes With A Small Heel

Classic running shoes have a higher heel to balance out the foot strike when runners land on their midfoot or forefoot. Because walkers strike with their heel, they want only a small difference in height between the heel and the ball of the foot.

The minimalist shoe trend for runners is producing more and more shoes with a low heel-toe drop or offset, more in line with the needs of walkers.

As a fast walker, you want to avoid shoes with a big heel-toe drop or offset. You can’t always judge this just by looking at the shoe, as the designs may hide the truth. Ask the salesperson or consult the shoe manufacturer’s product information.

What Are The Things To Look For When Choosing A Pair Of Walking Shoes For Standing And Walking All Day

The walking shoe must be the right fit for your foot size: Poorly fitting shoes can lead to health concerns such as bunions, blisters, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, and stress fractures. Everyone’s feet are shaped a bit differently, so the shoes that are perfect for your friend might not be perfect for you. Have both of your feet measured by a professional before buying shoesit is common for one of your feet to be larger than the other.

There must be ample and good support for your type of arch : Having proper support for your entire foot is important so you aren’t putting undue stress on one part of your foot, which can lead to injuries. When you get your feet measured to size, talk about your arch and learn if it is high, neutral, or low.

They must have a cushioning system that grips your feet for stability and extra comfort: This will help reduce your chances of falling while you’re walking. It will also help you walk faster and take longer strides because your steps will be more solid. This is especially important if you walk on hard surfaces.

The walking shoes must be versatile enough in design that they can take you to different venues without you feeling conscious about your footwear: You want to be able to go from your desk to a meeting and then out to dinner without bringing a bunch of different shoes with you for your day. Prioritize comfort, but also keep your style in mind when you are looking for a shoe that you will be in all day.

Anatomy Of A Walking Shoe

Walking the Camino. Foot Wear Boots vs. Hiking Shoes

Walking shoes can come in many different styles- some very basic with few features and higher specification shoes with many of the features youd find with a pair of walking boots. Not all walking shoes will be waterproof or breathable and the materials used, most notably for the sole, will differ. This is more than likely to be reflected in the cost of the shoes.

They Should Feel Good

At the end of the day, the best shoes to wear for long walks are fairly individualized. So long as they have a cushioned sole, ample arch support, and the ability to absorb shock, they’re worthy of your consideration. The biggest determining factor, then, is how they feel on your feet, specifically. “The best indication that a pair of shoes will work well for you is that they’re comfortable when you put them on and when you move in them,” says Gretchen Weimer, the global vice president of product at HOKA One One . “Keep in mind that what works best for someone else might not be the best for you, so it’s always best to try a pair on for yourself.” She recommends the brand’s Clifton 7 , designed with a full-compression midsole and a moderate heel bevel for support and comfort.

Are There Other Safety Precautions I Should Take

This depends on your workplace. Some warehouse work, for example with smaller, local companies, have relatively lax safety requirements. When this is the case, use your judgment and do your due diligence to ensure your feet stay safe, secure, and attached.

Comparatively, there are other workplaces, for example larger corporations with armies of safety personnel, who have far more stringent safety precautions. We have even seen some safety manuals with entire chapters on footwear! When this is the case, follow those guidelines to a tee.
