Hotter & A New Generation Of Manufacturing Technologies

At Hotter, Perkins explained, we have invested heavily to create the UKs biggest and most efficient shoe factory, that make 35% of all the shoes still made in the UK.

A lot of shoe factories are very labour intensive, but in our factory, you see mainly the use of robotics and automated production lines.

Where processes would have been done individually, they have been blended together, with the use of semi- and fully automated robotics. This means, our labour costs are relatively low, but our capital investment is much higher than in an average shoe business.

The labour cost pressure has been on the business for quite a long time, Perkins said, and since the 1980s the company has progressively rolled out a programme of investment in machines on the shop floor, with the recent purchase of Hotters latest robot a couple of months ago.

Overview Of Hotter Shoes

Established in Skelmersdale, England, Hotter first opened up shop in 1959. Founded by Stewart Houlgrave, this UK-based brand was formed as a branch of their parent company Beaconsfield Footwear.

With a mission to develop comfortable and chic sneakers and sandals, Hotter quickly hit the ground running when they were named United Kingdoms leading shoe manufacturer.

Now led by CEO Ian Watson, Hotter continues to grow hotter in popularity. In 2015, they won the Queens Award for Enterprise for International Trade. Known for its Cushion+ technology, this footwear brand serves over 4 million customers worldwide.

They have also partnered up with , an organization dedicated to supporting those with terminal illnesses. Via a statement made by Hotter.com:

Your feet are as individual as you are, which is why we have up to 40 fitting and size combinations to give you the perfect fit. Hotter has been creating comfortable footwear that fits perfectly for over 60 years. We have help online, fitting experts just a phone call away.

Before we get into this Hotter shoes review, lets go over some of the brands pros and cons:

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

I have found my Crest GTX boots to be pretty much perfect. Good fit, waiting for half size in the colour I wanted to be available. Waterproof, as expected with GORE-TEX. Grip underfoot is also excellent, walking an undulating section of Hadrians Wall last week confirmed that. I was a little worried about the depth of the sole but have yet to feel any stones underfoot. Hoping that the soles will be durable, only time will tell. Best of all – the Stability Bar that does wonders for my balance and allows me to walk for hours without the foot pain later. 25% off offer made this my best boot buy in a long while. Thank you Hotter.

Made as an update to the brands Dew style, these trainers are improved with Cushion+ technology. Complete with Freesoles, Infinergy inserts, and an OrthoLite footbed, these kicks are made toabsorb pressure and shock.

Other features include a soft leather upper and padded collar to keep blisters and bruises from forming. To fit with its bookish vibe, we suggest pairing them with slim-fit flannel pants and a mock neck top.

Available in 4 different colors, the $139 Fearne Shoes are a steal for $79.

How Do We Select The Made In Uk Footwear Brands That Make The List

Hotter Made in England Jewel Leather Ballet Pumps, Black ...

In order to decide who made this list of shoes made in the UK we took into account several criteria.

Firstly, we wanted to make sure that we had a good mix of mens, womens and childrens shoes that showed the diversity of what footwear can made in Britain.

Whether a brand was 100% made in the UK was also an important factor, as well as those that are best in class or have an iconic design, such as the Dr. Marten boot.

We also factored in those British shoe brands which the Make it British team themselves have owned and worn, meaning that the quality of the product had been tried and tested.

Finally, we made sure we included members of Make it British as a thank you for supporting this site!

Wed love to hear your comments on your favourite British-made shoe brands. Please add them in the conversation at the end of this post.

Our Second List Of Footwear Companies That Manufacture Their Shoes In Britain

Churchs Shoes

When we first compiled an article with a list of ten brands of English shoes that are still made in Britain we never could have believed how popular it was to become and the strength of feeling it would arouse in people. Since it was published in May 2011 the article has received over 70 comments from readers with suggestions, as well as outrage, for brands that had been left off the list, as well as arguments about which firms were genuinely making all of their shoes in the UK.

So to kick of 2013 we bring you a new list of an additional 10 brands that still make their shoes in Britain. In particular there has been a call for more womens shoes to be found, so we have included a couple, but we are sad to say that there are very few English shoemakers specialising in ladies shoes in the UK these days. There are still at least another 10 brands that we could have added, so watch out for a further article in the future, and as always, if you have suggestions for who has been left off the list then please leave a comment.

How Hotter Shoes Returned To Its 1950s ‘direct To Consumer Roots

The firm recorded soaring Christmas sales and its CEO is ‘thrilled’ at the recent footwear market surge

  • 05:00, 9 FEB 2021

The CEO of the countrys biggest footwear maker says he is absolutely thrilled at the surge in the market as the UK looks to exit lockdown – and that he expects a further bounce after what was a difficult 12 months for the industry.

Ian Watson is CEO of Skelmersdale-based Hotter Shoes, a firm that sells over 1.3m pairs a year, and last year closed the majority of its physical stores during a CVA.

But Mr Watson now has big plans for the coming years, and technical innovations including 3D foot scanning machines and augmented reality fittings will see his firm well-placed for the future.

Last month, Hotter announced soaring online Christmas sales in the six weeks to December 31 – leaping by 27%.

That came after a period of transformation for the firm, which saw 59 stores close and a switch to digital channels, while retaining 23 physical outlets.

Explaining his firms turnaround, Mr Watson told BusinessLive: We’ve successfully remodelled the business from something that was quite retail centric, to something now, which is quite digitally centric.

Originally Hotter sold products directly to consumers through catalogues – this direct to consumer culture has been in the DNA of the company.

Are All Their Shoes Leather

Hotter Store Shoe Fitting

All Hotter shoes are made from leather, though unlike ECCO they do not produce and control the supply chain behind their leathers. Whether it is a smooth leather, a soft suede or velvety nubuck, Hotter use high quality materials to ensure your comfort and long-lasting style. The linings are made from either leather or high quality man made materials like microfibre. Hotter cover their insoles in leather or microfibre, so you can be sure of a comfort underfoot too. Typically a fully leather lined shoe is the best combination for comfort though sport and outdoor styles require a more grippy, man made alternative to perform best.

New Technologies Help Recreate Uk Shoe Manufacturing Industry

Robert Perkins, CEO at Hotter, explains how the Lancashire-based shoe manufacturer managed to attract young people by creating a more technology driven work environment.

The British footwear industry has launched a new nationally accredited apprenticeship, which has been designed by employers to be flexible, and it offers high-quality entry-level training and experience to those interested in joining a highly skilled industry.

The new scheme aims to better grasp the economic opportunities which future UK shoe manufacturing industries offer to the country.

Robert Perkins, British Footwear Association board member and CEO at Hotter, told The Manufacturer: The new apprenticeship is a great opportunity to train a new generation of shoemakers to help recreate a UK shoemaking industry.

Hotter Shoes To Fly The Flag

Hotter Comfort Concept Shoes has been selected to showcase the best of British manufacturing.

Hotter Comfort Concept Shoes has been chosen to represent the North West of England in a national scheme to highlight the best of British manufacturing. All 650 British Members of Parliament are nominating a product manufactured in their constituency. The footwear designed and made in Hotter Shoes Lancashire factory has been recommended by Rosie Cooper MP for the national Made By Britain collection, as an excellent representative of manufacturing in her region.

Hotter Shoes Managing Director, Peter Taylor commented: We are honoured that Rosie Cooper MP has nominated us, and are proud that one in every three pairs of shoes made in the UK are made in our factory. Many footwear brands have taken their manufacturing abroad, but we are proud to have retained our British heritage and the flexibility and control to manufacture world class products in a highly competitive market.

At the launch of the scheme in 2011, UK Secretary of State, Vince Cable said: British industry remains among the very best for the quality and originality of what it makes. We export our goods to every corner of the world, from famous international brands to products which, while less well known, make a real difference to the lives of millions. With the Olympics bringing so much attention to Britain, this is a fantastic opportunity to show the rest of the world that we make world-beating products.
