Seriously I’m Not Even Good At This

Personalized Converse Sneakers Painted Converse Shoes

Last night a friend of my texted me: Hey, you wanna play some Diablo 3? Since wed been self-quarantining for almost three weeks, our regular video game sessions have become an important ritual. I told him Id be ready in a few minutes, and then an hour later canceled. My excuse was that I had chores to do around my apartment, but the truth is I had spent that whole time designing my own custom Converse All Stars on their website.

I like how it looks when I put a pattern on the tongue, but use solid colors on the rest of the shoe.

Were all going a little crazy I guess.

There are a few templates to choose from, and each has its own customization options :

  • California desperately needs rain. What are the chances of a ‘miracle’ in March?
  • Converses parent company, Nike, has really hit a sweet spot here. The All-Star brand is a favorite of musicians, hippies, artists, and other folks who like to deface and customize their own stuff. I remember one guy in high school drew a royal flush poker hand on the toe of his pair of standard black Chucks. So Nikes decision to let us do it ourselves, using all the interactivity that the modern internet has to offer, is clever.

    Its also really fun.

It doesnt bleed into the material because the amount of alcohol is tiny, but just enough to transfer ink. This is why a sharpie is ideal for drawing on so many objects, including paper, plastic, and even metal.

Off The Courts Converse Keeps It Fresh

When Marquis Mills Converse founded a company in 1908 that began providing rubber shoes for men, women, and children, he probably never imagined his last name would one day be known as a staple of a worldwide sneaker culture.

    But here we are.

The Converse Rubber Shoe Co. of Malden, Mass., began turning its attention to rubber-soled shoes for athletic usage in 1917. Shortly after, a fellow named Chuck Taylor walked into Converses shop complaining of sore feet. Converse not only hooked him up with a pair of shoes but with a job as well, as a salesman and advocate for the shoemaker.

And the rest, as they say, is sneaker history.

How To Cover Converse Shoes With Fabric

I believe that you could try this with other types of shoes. However, I think that the Converse are unique, and well suited for this project since the tongue comes really far out of the shoe (making it easier to work with, and its exposed while youre wearing them. That way you can actually see the fabric you cover the shoes with. Also, Converse shoes have a raw edge around the tongue that is zig-zagged, so a zig-zagged finished seam around the top of the shoe doesnt look out of place.

From The Courts To The Streets

As other brands and styles began to take hold on basketball courts and other fields of play, Converse began to realize increasing popularity away from sports. The brand had actually begun taking on a rebellious sort of tone as far back as the 1950s, with icons like James Dean rocking them with his jeans and leather jacket. But the shoe began to gain a stronger foothold in those lifestyle circles as punk and grunge bands adopted the footwear in the 1980s and 90s.

When Nike acquired Converse in 2003, it opened up even further design and tech options for a shoe that had become famous for being decidedly low tech. Variations have included the chunky lugged outsole, Lunarlon dual-density foam midsoles, and collaborations that have brought a variety of visual variants.

At New Converse Store Shoppers Can Customize Their Chucks

Lots of websites let shoppers customize apparel by picking from a set of available colors and materials. The new Converse store in Boston goes a step further and gives customers the opportunity design their own Chucks in person.

The 3,500-square-foot store, which opens Friday, is connected to Converses new headquarters at Lovejoy Wharf and features tall glass windows that look out onto the Zakim Bridge. Converse will help its patrons customize shoes at its Blank Canvas workshop near the back of the store, where a colorful array of removable bolts of fabrics, leather, canvas, and other materials line one wall.

In scheduled one-hour sessions, a shopper can sit down with a Converse maestro and pick materials, rubber toe caps, laces, eyelets and other add-ons to create a unique shoe. Converse then sends the design to an off-site manufacturer, and the shoes are delivered to the customer about a month later.

The cost for customized kicks varies, depending on the materials, but Converse expects the total to exceed the $55 price of a typical pair of Chuck Taylors.

We really want to create that feeling of self-expression and creativity, so that when they sit down, they feel like they are at a workshop, said David Kelsay, vice president of global retail at Converse. We want them to feel like they are making this shoe.

    Create The Finished Edge

How To Customize Converse All Star Sneakers PLUS Unboxing

Fold under the top edge of the fabric and press in place. Use a bit of glue from your glue stick to get the edge to stay in place.

Place a thin line of the Gutterman glue along the folded edge of the wrong side of the fabric and up the curves on both sides.

With the shoe still firmly on the sleeve board, place the fabric on the top of the tongue, lining up the folded edge of the fabric and curves of the shoe and fabric. Use an awl, or straight pin to work the fabric right up to the edge of the rubber part of the shoe. Make sure also that the glue goes all the way to the edge of the fabric. It dries clear, so a bit of it can show, just not too much or it will look sloppy. Use a couple of straight pins to hold the fabric in place.

Leave it to rest at least 30 minutes, so that it can dry completely. DO NOT rush this step.
