On the morning of January 26, 2020, Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Gigi Bryant, and seven other people boarded a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter on their way to a basketball game. Bryant was scheduled to coach the Lady Mambas at their noon game at the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks.
Tragically, the group never reached their destination. At around 10 a.m., the helicopter crashed in Calabasas, California, killing everyone on board. After the horrible news about Kobe Bryants death broke, people from all across the globe started paying tribute to the basketball icon.

Vanessa Bryant revealed in a series of social media posts earlier this week that she was blindsided upon seeing an image of a shoe she helped design, a black and white Mamba Forever special edition of the Nike Kobe 6 Protro, from her late husband Kobe Bryants signature series with the brand.
The specific colorway in question, featuring subtle gold accents throughout, was created as a tribute to her daughter, Gianna.
It was going to be called the MAMBACITA shoe as an exclusive black and white colorway on her daddys shoes, she wrote in one post. I picked the colors in honor of her uniform, the number 2 she wore just like her uniform, the inside pattern, Kobe and Gigi on the back in gold instead of Kobes signature, the inside shoe details , etc.
The sneakers, designed in conjunction with Nike nearly a year ago, were originally scheduled to be released this summer before being placed on indefinite hold after Vanessa and the Kobe Bryant Estate elected not to renew the contract with Nike this year.

2021 is shaping up to be a big, big year for Kobe Bryants sixth signature sneaker, with news of yet another confirmed OG reissue for its 10th anniversary. This time around its the White Del Sol aka POP aka Playoff Pack, which joins the previously-previewed Black Del Solfor a Spring 2021 release.
Just like that pair, this comes dressed in a mix of black, white, and Del Sol yellow, albeit it in drastically different proportions. In fact, the only consistent elements are the pairs matching black heel clip and murdered-out midsoles. Differences start at the white textured upper that comes paired with a solid white heel panel. White continues onto the tongue, laces, and the outsoles heel, with vivid yellow coming into play at the liners and forefoot rubber. The late basketball playerâs Adidas Kobe 1 and EQT Elevation are slated to return â seemingly without Vanessa Bryantâs approval.
The divorce between Kobe Bryantâs estate and Nike has been a messy one: After Vanessa Bryant allowed her late husbandâs contract with the Swoosh to expire earlier this year, the company proceeded to produce Nike Kobe 6 Protro âMambacitaâ sneakers, which Ms. Bryant said were designed in honor of her late daughter Gigi and never intended to be made . Still, the footwear made its way into the hands of resellers, who offered the shoes online for nearly $7,000 before their listings were ultimately removed.
Evidently, Nikeâs disrespect turned the Bryant estate away from participating in any further brand deals Vanessa also launched her own âMambacitaâ brand to carry out future commemorative drops. Yet Complex reports that in 2022, Adidas plans to re-release two of the sneakers Kobe Bryant wore while he was signed to the German sportswear brand through the late â90s and early â00s.
A nod to the good old days â Bryantâs signature sneaker from 2001, the Kobe 1, and the EQT Elevation , are set to return next year, a source familiar with Adidasâ upcoming releases tells Complex.
Adidas has not announced the Crazy 97 EQT or Crazy 1 â images of the sneakers are leaks not authorized by the brand, courtesy of Complexâs source.

UPDATE 4/29: Nike announces that the Mambacita Sweet 16 Kobe 6 Protro will release on May 1st, which would have been Gigis 16th birthday, via Exclusive Access in the SNKRS app.
The shoes will also be available for select Nike members in the Los Angeles area via SNKRS Pass. Nike notes its prioritizing members who have put the Mamba Mentality to work on the court and fans who have followed Kobe and Gigis journey from the beginning for this release. All profits from the Mambacita Sweet 16 sales will be donated to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation.
UPDATE 4/27: Nike reveals official photos of the Mambacita Kobe 6 Protro. A release date has yet to be announced.
UPDATE 6/3: Following its leak last month, Vanessa Bryant has officially made a statement on the unreleased Nike Kobe 6 Protro Mambacita colorway. She took to Instagram to address the leaks, explaining that the shoe were intended to honor their daughter, Gigi, with proceeds benefiting the Mambacita Sports Foundation. However, since the Bryant estate and Nike didnt not re-sign their deal, the shoes were not supposed to be sold.

Nike Is Officially Releasing Kobe Bryants Kobe 6 Protro Mambacita Sneaker
The launch arrives nearly a year after the sneaker was produced without approval from Bryants estate.
Nike has had a complicated relationship with Kobe Bryants estate since the basketball players unexpected passing. Between a lackluster partnership offer and the unapproved production of new Kobe sneakers, Bryants widow hadnt been too happy with the brand.
In March, however, Nike announced that it had reached a deal with the Bryant estate to continue the late basketball players line of sneakers and apparel. The first release under the renewed relationship will be the Nike Kobe 6 Protro Mambacita, an unreleased sneaker that made its rounds on resale sites last year much to the dismay of Vanessa. She designed the shoe in honor of her late daughter Gianna Gigi Bryant, who also passed in the helicopter crash that took Kobes life.
A change of heart I wanted to be sold to honor my daughter with ALL of the proceeds benefiting our Mamba Mambacita Sports Foundation, but I did not re-sign the Nike contract and decided not to sell these shoes, Vanessa had said on Instagram at the time. The Mambacita shoes were not approved to be made in the first place. Nike has not sent any of these pairs to me and my girls. I do not know how someone else has their hands on shoes I designed in honor of my daughter Gigi and we don’t. I hope these shoes did not get sold.
