Christian Louboutins Early Years
In his early teens, Christian Louboutin began sketching shoes, as he did not care much for academia. According to Louboutin, his interest and fascination with footwear began in 1976 when he visited the National Museum of Arts of Africa and Oceania in Paris, France.
There was a sign in the museum that forbid women from wearing sharp stilettos in the building due to fear of them damaging the wood floors. This stayed with Louboutin and he would later tap into that signs image for design inspiration.
I wanted to defy that. I wanted to create something that broke rules and made women feel confident and empowered, he said.
Christian Louboutin is one of the worlds most well-known shoe designers
Louboutin is a born rebel and uses that attitude in his designs. Look at his collections today. He has his classic silhouettes and also many designs with adornments like jewels and spikes as well as a range of materials, patterns, and bold colors.
After running away to Egypt and India in his teens, he returned to Paris in 1981 with a portfolio of drawings of his high heels. He met the man who claims to have invited the stiletto, Roger Vivier and became his apprentice.
Later, Louboutin would work in a freelance capacity, designing womens shoes for Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, and Maud Frizon. In 1991, with funding support from two parties, Christian Louboutin started his own company.
His first customer was Princess Caroline of Monaco. Diana von Furstenberg would soon become a client.

Today, the man behind this brand is as popular as ever, as he and his team continue to evolve the shoe, bag, and accessory company into its next phase for both their male and female customers.
Christian Louboutin Shoes Are Works Of Art
The price of Louboutins is often a deterrent for potential buyers. However, affluent footwear is more a form of artwork than a piece of equipment.
In the same way someone might curate a collection of fine art, owners of Christian Louboutins are also accumulating works of art. They are just displaying them through their style, rather than on the walls of their home.
Either method, the artwork is used to make a statement to the planet and the luxury fashion market is a testament to that.

Louboutin Wins Case To Trademark Signature Red
The European Union’s highest court has ruled that designer Christian Louboutin can trademark his company’s signature red-soled shoes.
ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:
Now a story with sole.
JENNIFER LOPEZ: I’m throwing on my Louboutins. I’m throwing on my Louboutins.
CARDI B: These expensive, these is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes.
SHAPIRO: Louboutins – the designer shoe with the red soles.
AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:
They’re all over celebrity magazines and pop culture. Carrie Bradshaw had them on when Miranda went into labor in “Sex And The City.”
SARAH JESSICA PARKER: And thus, with a destroyed pair of Christian Louboutins, began Miranda’s delivery.
SHAPIRO: There’s even a reference to them in the new “Mean Girls” musical on Broadway.
TAYLOR LOUDERMAN: I will grind you to sand beneath my Louboutin heel.
CORNISH: And this week, that’s what designer Christian Louboutin did in court. He won a legal case protecting those trademark red soles.
SHAPIRO: The European Court of Justice ruled that a Dutch company had infringed on the trademark by selling its own red-soled shoes.
SUSAN SCAFIDI: And the reason why this case had to go all the way to the Court of Justice of the European Union is that there was a question – are those red soles a shape or are they a color?
SCAFIDI: It means that no other company can use red soles legitimately because the red soles are not just a cool, decorative element. They are a sign or a signifier of the Louboutin company.
Why Is It Expensive: The Christian Louboutin Red Soles
If you know your fashion basics, youd know that every brand has a signature product that acts as its insignia, a sort of letimotif Bulgari has its Serpenti, Chanel its tweed, and Burberry its trench. Luxury shoe aficionados familiar with French designer Christian Louboutin will know that his most iconic offering are his red soles. Since the inception of the eponymous label in 1991, Louboutin has been at the forefront of footwear innovation, developing a cult following in a very short time. And the story of how in 1993 the designer launched these famed red soles is a popular one. Its said that Louboutin spotted one of his employees applying red nail polish, and he picked up the varnish and painted the soles of a prototype, red. The result? Exquisitely crafted heels with red-lacquered soles that youd recognise from a distance as being Loubs.
So how much do these red soles cost? Customised Louboutin red soles can touch a whopping US$6,000 . In 2009, an exclusive capsule collection from the brand was Marie Antoinette, of which only 36 pairs were created, priced at US$6,200 .
The customisation services start at US$4,000 , and when you have loyal clients such as novelist Danielle Steel who owns over 6,000 Louboutin pairs, there is hardly anything out of bounds. The only think to do is start thinking of what you want .

Not Just About A Red Sole
Reflecting on the case years later, Lewin describes it as one of the most interesting cases in my career because it crossed over from the law and business side to the consumer side. Not only did lawyers follow it, or business leaders and CEOs, but it caught the eye of the consumers. It was all over digital media, as well as the print media and television and radio around the world, whether it was because it was a dispute between two French designers, whether it was because it was a legal dispute, or because it involved high fashion with some salacious content like people calling each other names.
The press was relentless on this case and they followed it closely. Most of the talking heads on television routinely got it wrong, he recalls. So, we had to manage the message from the point of the client because either side could easily have won the legal fight but lost the public opinion fight, and, in doing so, especially from Louboutins point of view, it would have dramatically affected the business. So, we took extraordinary pains to both manage the message as well fight the case in court.
And the element of consumer attention was significant. It meant that the case was about more than just a red shoe sole. It was about consumer perception.
With the high-stakes nature of rights at play, and given that the world was watching closely for almost two years, according to Lewin, we and the case, itself became a game changer.
