From Corner Store To Leader In Skateboarding And More: The Story Of Vans
The beginnings of Vans seem pretty humble. In March 1966, Paul van Doren and his brother James, along with their business partner Serge D’Elia and Gordon Lee, a longtime friend, opened “The Van Doren Rubber Company” in Anaheim, California. What made the company special was that it manufactured its products on demand and sold them directly to customers. The first shoe, named Style #44, later became known as Authentic and is still in the product line today. On the first day, a proud 12 copies are sold.
In the early 70s, Californian skateboarders discovered the Vans deck shoes for themselves because of the look and the grip of the sole. In 1976, Style #96 joins the lineup – an evolution of the Vans Authentic with more cushioning. The shoe incorporates design ideas from iconic skaters like Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta and goes down in history as the first Vans skate shoe with the name Vans Era. At the same time, the “Off The Wall” logo is created and other famous models like the Vans Old Skool , Slip-On and Sk8-Hi follow. The rest, as they say, is history.

How Do Vans Slip Ons Fit
Although most Vans styles run true to size, some waver from this. One example is its slip-on styles.
Slip-on Vans tend to provide a tighter fit, both length and width-wise. However, be wary about buying one size up. This style often stretches with wear, so if you venture too far from your regular fit, it might become too loose once youve broken them in.
Vans also produce its footwear in medium width. So, if the width is too snug for you, try half a size larger.
Our Tips For Finding The Perfect Size
Below weve gathered a few of our best tips for finding the right size for you:
- Avoid assuming your size. The best way to ensure you get the best fit is to measure your feet. An easy technique is placing your foot on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall. Mark where your longest toe reaches and measure from that point to the wall.
- Consult the size chart for the brand youre buying from. As weve seen above, brands differ in sizes. Even though youre a size 9 in Nike, it doesnt mean youre the same in Vans. You can read another comparison in our Adidas vs Nike sizing
- If youre planning on wearing thick socks, wear those while measuring. The same goes for insoles, especially if youre using orthotics that can take up a significant amount of space.
- Measure your feet in the afternoon or following exercise. These are the times where theyll swell and give you a more accurate measurement.

On Point On Court Or Off
Your shoe game can be as important off the court as it is on. Choose from performance footwear that will have you locked in and ready for the jump, or from court-inspired looks that will have you prepped for your postgame.Whos your influence? LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, Paul George, and James Harden are all current stars with signature shoes. Fresh colourways drop regularly, so sign up for emails to stay informed of whats dropping next and when. But old-school stars have a strong sneaker game, too. Kobe Bryant retired in 2016, His Airness Michael Jordan walked away for good in 2004, and even Walt Clyde Frazier walks among them as the first modern-era basketball player to get his own signature shoe, from PUMA back in 1973. And dont forget the true trendsetter, Chuck Taylor and his namesake Converse high-tops that debuted in the 1920s. And given the number of big names who wear all of those silhouettes, its safe to say those kicks have remained more than a little relevant to the culture.

How Does Vans Sizing Run
Vans states that its shoes run true to size. This means that theyre sized per U.S. standard, determined by a Brannock device. So, if youre usually a size 9, for instance, then Vans should fit the same.
However, one thing that often confuses consumers when purchasing Vans is the lack of womens sizes. The reason for this is that Vans shoes are unisex. So whether youre a guy who likes glitter or a girl who wants chunky skate shoes, the company doesnt gender bias.
This can make it challenging for women to find appropriate sizes if youve got narrow, small feet.
To give you an overlook of its sizes, weve included a chart below:

Nike Sb Sizing Compared To Vans
Nike SB is probably the closest resemblance to Vans out of all the brands models. SB is a line of skateboarding apparel.
To compare, well be looking at theOld Skool Core Classic from Vans. This is a top-performer, a premium option for skateboarders.
The Old Skool works to relieve pressure on the bony areas of your feet by using a padded collar as well as a cushioned footbed. This enables the wearer to move freely, bend and slide without having the shoe cause blisters and sores.
Vans offers a narrow construction, allowing the shoe to hug your feet. It also prevents the sneaker from flying off while performing board tricks and stunts.
With the Nike SB, they tend to fit more snugly around the feet due to an integrated elastic band and improved tongue design. These features are all to keep the sneaker in place, similarly to the Vans Old Skool.
Whats impressive about the SB is the Lunarlon insoles. These reduce impact while protecting the underside of your feet during tricks. So despite their close fit, theyre quite comfortable.
