Top Ragstock Stores For Vintage Clothing

1. Chicago, IL Wicker Park

Ragstock opened its first store in Wicker Park in 2002. In 2014, the store moved to its current location at 1459 Milwaukee Ave. The larger space allowed for an expansion of the vintage clothing department, and today the Wicker Park Ragstock receives the very best vintage items in the company. The other Chicago Ragstock, located at Clark and Belmont in Lakeview, also has a sizable selection of vintage and recycled clothing.

2. Minneapolis, MN Uptown

The Uptown Minneapolis store was one of the very first Ragstock locations. Descend the stairs at 1433 W Lake Street to find an eclectic basement-level store that was frequented by members of the Minneapolis music scene in the 80s and 90s. The store is still a quintessential part of Uptown, thanks in large part to its expansive selection of vintage clothing.

3. Madison, WI

Ragstock in Madison is located on the idyllic pedestrian mall known as State Street. Fun fact: the previous tenant was a pet store called Fur Fin and Feather. The current inventory, which includes plenty of vintage clothing, is only slightly less cute than the animals that once inhabited the space.

4. Ann Arbor, MI

A relatively new store by Ragstock standards, the Ann Arbor location opened in 2010 and has become a favorite among University of Michigan students. The store has been voted Best Thrift / Vintage Shop by Michigan Daily readers for three consecutive years.

5. Bloomington, MN Mall of America

A Brief History Of Vintage Clothing

Vintage clothing wasnt always cool. In the early 1950s, when the booming postwar economy sparked modern day consumerism in the United States, people sought out the newest, shiniest products they could find, and clothing was no exception. Used clothing wasnt fashionable. In fact, it was really only worn by people who couldnt afford new clothing. It wasnt until the hippie and mod movements of the mid 1960s that used stopped being a dirty word when it came to clothing.

As the hippies faded and used clothing continued to become more popular, the new counterculture of the late 1970s and early 1980s, led by punk and new wave bands like the Ramones and the Talking Heads, gave new life to vintage fashions. By the late 1980s, with vintage clothing becoming increasingly popular and increasingly scarce, some manufacturers began producing reproductions of hard-to-find vintage clothing items. The 1990s saw an increasing modernization of the used clothing industry, with websites like eBay making it possible for people to buy and sell vintage clothing worldwide. As the internet has become more advanced and broadband access more widespread, sites like Etsy and apps such as Depop have made shopping for vintage clothing online more popular than ever.

The Best Places To Buy And Sell Vintage Sneakers

Vintage Nike Sneakers + Where to Find

Have you checked out all the options for cool vintage sneakers lately? Theres never been a better selection of used athletic shoes, and from an environmental standpoint, buying preowned vs. fast fashion is a great way to go.

There are a lot of shoes on Planet Earth, and most of them arent being walked around in. According to the Shoe Industry blog, we produce about 20 billion pairs of shoes every year, and a staggering 300 million pairs get thrown away. Leather sneakers and shoes can take up to 40 years to decompose and, as they do, unhealthy chemicals are released into the environment. And chemicals like ethylene vinyl acetate that are commonly used in the soles of shoes can take 1,000 years to decompose.

So, its good to:

  • Not throw your old sneakers and shoes into the trash
  • Donate your used sneakers and shoes
  • Sell your used sneakers and shoes
  • Buy used sneakers and shoes
  • Buy sneakers and shoes made with eco-friendly materials, such as hemp or recycled materials
  • Because there are so many sneakers and shoes that are already in circulation, youve never had better odds of finding the perfect pair to suit your fancy. In fact, Ive been reading that the used clothing, shoes, and accessories market is going to surpass new goods in the next few years, which makes total sense for our beleaguered planet.

And, if you want to make some extra cash, most of the places where you can buy great vintage sneakers and other used shoes let you sell shoes there too.

Where To Find Vintage Style Shoes

These vintage 1960s shoes for women were fashionable & far ...

Many of the blogs we write come from conversations with customers in Cats Like Us… and this one is no different. I often get asked where you can buy vintage looking shoes. True vintage shoes are hard to come by because people wore them out. Often the leather is cracked, vinyl peeling, soles disintegrating, and sizes are short and narrow… But do not despair… there are a lot of companies making reproduction, and vintage looking shoes today! Here are my suggestions for places to find vintage style shoes along with a vintage photo reference.

Do Pros Use Spikeless Golf Shoes

    Selling Your Vintage Clothes Fast

Pin this! How to sell you vintage clothing quickly

So you inherited some vintage clothing. How can you sell it, donate it, or just get rid of it as quickly and painlessly as possible? This has been a weekly, if not daily, question I am asked so it is about time I answer it.

There are many different places to sell your collection depending on what you have, how much you want for it and how much time you have to spend finding the ideal owner.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What age are my items? Anything pre-1980s will be easier to sell. 80s casual clothes and denim are also on trend. 80s and 90s mens suits and dressy clothes are not collectable, yet.
  • What quality are my items? Designer labels can go for big bucks. No label/non-brand name/handmade items are still desirable but less profitable. Research labels here.
  • How much time do I have? Selling items yourself will take the most time but give you the highest profits. Selling your items as a lot or collection will be quicker but will get a smaller profit. Donating items to a thrift store/school/museum is fast but you only get a tax write off for them.
  • How much profit do you need? I say NEED because the less you are willing to take, the quicker it will be to re-home them. Dont research prices online and expect a buyer/re-seller to pay you top dollar for it. Re-sellers want at least a 60% margin for what they expect to sell an item for.

Ragstock: Recycling For Over 70 Years

After returning from World War II, Howard Weisskopf was working for his brothers scrap metal business in Minneapolis. An independent spirit, he sought to start his own company. He saw an opportunity in recycling clothing and textiles the rag business, as it was called.

Ragstock was founded in July 1954 when Howard borrowed money to buy a truck, and began driving around picking up used clothing. He rented a warehouse in Downtown Minneapolis, on a parcel of land that was later used to build the Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome, and US Bank Stadium . As business picked up, a few employees were hired to help sort clothing and prepare it for resale.

Sixty years later, a lot has changed. But vintage clothing and a commitment to recycling remain an important part of Ragstocks DNA.
